WEFOUNDThe Dawn of the Pacific Century: Implications for Three Worlds of Development

For more than fifteen years, Dawn Schiller has been a survivor-leader in the anti-trafficking, domestic violence and sexual assault movements. As a speaker, trainer and author, she combines her personal experiences and academic studies in difference, power and discrimination to raise awareness about sex trafficking, domestic violence and teen victimization.

Dawn was fifteen years old in 1976 when her family moved into an apartment complex managed by 32-year-old porn star John Holmes. After grooming Dawn, Holmes began a sexual relationship with her, manipulating her with drugs and alcohol, abusing her physically and emotionally, and prostituting her on the streets of Hollywood, to brothels and drug dealers. After the famed Wonderland murders in 1981, they fled to Florida, where she ultimately broke free and turned him over to the police.

Dawn eventually relocated to the Pacific Northwest, where she attended Eastern Oregon University and earned her undergraduate degree in Communication and Gender Studies in 2012, graduating summa cum laude. After gaining a full-tuition teaching fellowship, Dawn taught Women's Sudies and Activism at Oregon State University, where she completed her Master of Arts in Women's Studies in 2016.

Be sure to set the alarm so you don't miss the squeaky-tight conjunction of Venus and Mars Thursday morning. They'll stay close through the weekend.

Let's face it. If the solar system weren't essentially flat, the night sky would be much less interesting. The simple fact that the planets orbit racetrack-style around the Sun makes possible all manner of wonderful line-of-sight Moon-planet and planet-planet pairings. Obscure as it sounds, we owe a debt of gratitude to conservation of angular momentum for providing this week's very close conjunction of Mars and Venus.

The cloud of gas and dust that underwent gravitational collapse more than 4.5 billion years ago to form the Sun and planets probably started out with next to no spin. But to conserve angular momentum as it contracted, the nebula sped up, whirling faster and faster until it flattened into a pancake. In the center, where most of the mass was concentrated, the Sun formed. The planets grew from the remaining material within the disk.

Pacific Dawn is a cruise ship owned by Carnival Corporation and operated by P&O Cruises Australia . She was built in 1991 by the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone , Italy as Regal Princess . The ship was ordered by Sitmar Cruises , but delivered to Princess Cruises , and later deployed to the fleet of P&O Cruises Australia. [2]

After her multimillion-dollar refurbishment in Singapore from Regal Princess to Pacific Dawn , she operates from Australia to South Pacific destinations. Her renaming coincided with P&O's 75th anniversary in Australia. [5]

In 1988, while the two new ships ordered from Fincantieri were in the early stages of construction, Sitmar Cruises was sold to P&O Group and the three Sitmar ships under construction were transferred to the fleet of P&O's subsidiary Princess Cruises . [7] The second of the ships under construction at Fincantieri was launched from drydock on 29 March 1990 and named Regal Princess . [1] Following successful sea trials on 5 June 1991 Regal Princess was delivered on 20 July 1991 to Astamar , a subsidiary of P&O Group. [1] [2]
