Any researcher attempting an analytic study of C. S. Lewis's seven volume Chronicles of Narnia must possess three attributes: an understanding of Lewis's theology and the "sub-text" of the Chronicles , an appreciation of children's literature, and the patience and perseverance of a saint. Paul Ford has all three, and the Companion to Narnia reveals his dedication to his subject and to scholarly research.

Arranged in alphabetical order, the 315-page Companion is an encyclopedia of characters (major and minor), [End Page 50] places, events, objects, themes, motifs, issues, and illusions, and gives for each a brief yet concise definition, history, and its significance. It is painstakingly cross-referenced: each word or phrase in an entry which is also an entry itself is marked so that the reader may pursue the topic as deeply as s/he wishes. In addition, page references are given for both the American and British editions, and when a variance between the editions appears, it is noted and, if possible, explained.
