The Hunchback of Notre Dame premiered on June 19, 1996 at the New Orleans Superdome and was released worldwide on June 21, 1996. It received positive reviews from critics and was a box office success, earning over $325 million worldwide.

A direct-to-video sequel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame II , was released in 2002. A darker, Gothic stage adaption of the film was re-written and directed by James Lapine and produced by Walt Disney Theatrical in Berlin, Germany as Der Glöckner von Notre Dame that ran from 1999 to 2002.

Frollo soon returns to the Cathedral, forcing Quasimodo to hide Phoebus. Discovering that Quasimodo helped Esmeralda escape, the judge bluffs that he knows where the Court of Miracles is and that he intends to attack it at dawn with a battalion. After he leaves, Phoebus requests Quasimodo's help in finding the Court before Frollo. Using the map Esmeralda left, they find it and are almost hung by Clopin for being spies, but are saved when Esmeralda intervenes and clears up the misunderstanding. However, Frollo's army appears and captures them all, with the judge revealing that he followed Phoebus and Quasimodo.

Frollo is a pious hypocrite. Outwardly, he obsessively upholds and enforces the rules of the Notre Dame Cathedral, inwardly however he burns with a fanatical lust for Esmeralda. His obsession for her finally overcomes him and he orders Quasimodo to abduct her. Gringoire, clearly smitten, decides to follow Esmeralda and unintentionally witnesses her supposed kidnapping by Quasimodo and another man. He tries to come to her rescue but Quasimodo knocks him unconscious. The planned abduction is thwarted however by Capt. Phoebus and his guards who manage to save Esmeralda and arrest Quasimodo.

When Gringoire regains his senses, he roams the streets and unintentionally finds himself in the Cour des Miracles. Here, the marginalized of Paris find shelter. Their leader, “King” Clopin Trouillefou, plans to execute Gringoire--except if one of the gypsy women would marry him. Esmeralda steps up, saving his life, agreeing to a 4-year marriage period.

Quasimodo is brought to trial. Regrettably, it turns out that both he and his judge are deaf, one from old age, the other from ringing bells. The trial ends up becoming tragically comic, but as a result, Quasimodo is sentenced to be scourged for an hour then locked up in stocks for public humiliation for two hours. He is mercilessly whipped then left for the crowds to deride and abuse. Worn from his ordeal, he calls out for water. Esmeralda approaches the public stocks and gives him a drink of water; she, despite the previous kidnapping attempt, hears his cries and is moved to pity. This act of grace and mercy captures Quasimodo’s heart.

Music by Alan Menken, Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, Book by Peter Parnell | Based on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney film

Set in Paris, 1482, a band of traveling players arrives to bring the story of  The Hunchback of Notre Dame  to another audience. The deformed bell-ringer Quasimodo longs for just one day outside the walls of the legendary cathedral, but his master, the righteous Claude Frollo, is determined to shield him from the outside world. When Quasimodo unexpectedly crosses paths with Esmeralda, a gypsy and an outcast herself, he begins to realize there is more to the world, and to the people in it. When fear and judgment threaten the city and the friends he has come to love, Quasimodo must choose whom to trust – and what he is willing to risk for freedom.

Based on the 1831 novel by Victor Hugo and the 1996 film of the same name,  The Hunchback of Notre Dame  bursts into life onstage, framed by the incomparable music and lyrics of Academy Award-winners Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz. Featuring memorable songs including “Out There,” “The Bells of Notre Dame,” and “God Help The Outcasts,” this vibrant musical returns to Hugo’s original material in a hard look at humankind, and shines a light into the dark truths of the world.
