A few Damen Yacht Support deliveries are already cruising. However, none are like New Frontiers. Just launched last week, the 181-footer (55.3-meter) is the first to feature staterooms for the owners and guests.

New Frontiers is part of the Damen YS 5009 range. (One notable previous delivery from that range: Fast & Furious .) Therefore, she has helicopter landing and carrying capabilities, plus a Sea Axe hull form. The latter affords better seakeeping in even large seas, plus a reported top speed of 20 knots. Furthermore, range should be 5,000 nautical miles. However, instead of serving solely in a support role, New Frontiers is both a luxury cruiser unto herself as well as a secondary adventure seeker. As Rose Damen, Damen’s commercial director, puts it, “New Frontiers is ripping up the rule book.”

The owners requested a main-deck master suite and three guest staterooms for friends and family. “They want their holiday to be about freedom and spontaneity,” Rose Damen continues. Spontaneity indeed. While they may have New Frontiers accompany their primary megayacht, they envision hopping onboard for nearly last-minute, independent escapades. These can include weekend dive trips, she explains. Furthermore, she adds, these can include sending New Frontie rs to another anchorage close enough to reach via helicopter but far enough to provide a different, fun experience.

The President’s proposed FY 2016 budget for NASA released on February 2 contains a lot of good news for supporters of planetary science.

While most of the attention about the planetary budget has been focused on the money set aside for a mission to Europa (see “The gift of a Europa mission may have a cost” , The Space Review, February 9, 2015), another welcome bit of news is the allocation of funding for the next New Frontiers competition. NASA plans to issue a call for New Frontiers proposals in late 2016 and, if they follow their past schedule, that means that they’ll make a selection in 2018 for a spacecraft that will probably fly in 2023.

The planetary science community has recommended that NASA’s exploration of the solar system should involve a balanced mix of small, medium, and large missions. Large missions return the most science data, but because of their cost they generally fly at a rate of about one per decade (at best) and are led by very experienced scientists and managers. Large missions therefore don’t provide a steady pathway for the next generation of scientists and engineers to advance.

A new Industrial Transformation Research Hub will focus on developing unique high-value graphene products and devices for industry.

Australian Research Council (ARC) Chief Executive Officer, Professor Sue Thomas, welcomed the opening of the Australian Research Council (ARC) Industrial Transformation Research Hub for Graphene Enabled Industry Transformation at The University of Adelaide today.

The ARC Research Hub is receiving $2.6 million over five years through the Industrial Transformation Research Hubs scheme, a key component of the ARC Industrial Transformation Research Program (ITRP) , delivering research funding to enhance collaboration with key industries to find solutions to critical industry problems.
